STRIP FOR AFRICA 2009 is an initiative which was launched 4 years ago to send old sport gear– jerseys, socks, togs- (still in good condition) to schools in Africa.
Every house in Ireland has discarded sports gear (soccer, GAA, rugby etc). Teams change their strips and style regularly and of course children grow and no longer wear their old jerseys, togs and socks.
All of these in good condition and clean are welcome for the STRIP FOR AFRICA 2009 Initiative.
So far over 1,700 disadvantaged schools have received full strips of football gear. When one considers that there are approx. 3,300 primary schools in Ireland this figure of 1,700+ schools is enormous.
Orphanages, homes for the aged, drop in centres and others have also benefitted.
Thank you to all the teachers, children, football clubs, sports companies and others who have made this project what it is.
All over Ireland there are drop off / pick-up points.
This is an ideal charitable project for Transition Year students , pupils in 6th class (primary school) or C.S.P.E. students. In the past students have used the poster; have taken photos from the webpage; have made up their own newsletter. They have gone to schools and clubs (all codes) in their area. They have distributed letters in supermarkets and they have arranged special collection days.
The result is that Strip for Africa has gained enormously and the students have made a very worthwhile contribution to schools in very disadvantaged areas in South Africa.
The container will be in
TEMPLEOGUE COLLEGE, TEMPLEVILLE RD., DUBLIN 6W.
from 8th to 22nd Oct 2009.
Schools may leave bags there during those dates.
